Quick answer: Most bathroom remodels in Houston cost $6,000–$35,000. A guest bath refresh runs $6,000–$12,000, a primary bath remodel with a walk-in shower and double vanity runs $15,000–$28,000, and a full primary-suite renovation runs $30,000–$50,000. Most bathroom remodels take 2–4 weeks.
Bathrooms are one of the most rewarding rooms to remodel — and in Houston, one of the easiest to get wrong. Our humidity is relentless, and a bathroom that looks great on day one can be fighting mold and failed grout within a few years if the waterproofing and ventilation behind the tile weren't done right.
Here's what a bathroom remodel actually costs in the Greater Houston area in 2026, what drives the price, and what to insist on so your new bathroom lasts.
How much does a bathroom remodel cost in Houston?
| Project type | Typical Houston cost | What's usually included | Typical timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guest / hall bath refresh | $6,000–$12,000 | New vanity and top, fixtures, toilet, tile flooring, lighting, paint | 1–2 weeks |
| Tub-to-shower conversion | $8,000–$16,000 | Tub removal, waterproofed tile shower, glass enclosure, new valve and trim | 1–2 weeks |
| Primary bath remodel | $15,000–$28,000 | Walk-in shower, double vanity with quartz top, new flooring, lighting, ventilation | 2–4 weeks |
| Full primary-suite renovation | $30,000–$50,000 | Layout changes, custom tile, soaking tub, frameless glass, heated floors, relocated plumbing | 4–6 weeks |
Two things move a bathroom budget more than anything else: whether plumbing moves and how much tile you install. A floor-to-ceiling tile shower with a niche and bench costs considerably more than a half-wall tile surround — and moving a toilet or shower drain in a slab home means cutting concrete.
Bathroom remodel costs by project type
Guest bath refresh ($6,000–$12,000)
The most budget-friendly remodel keeps the tub and plumbing in place and updates everything you see: a new vanity and countertop, faucet, toilet, mirror, lighting, tile flooring, and paint. It's an ideal update before selling, or for a kids' bath that just needs to stop looking like 2005.
Tub-to-shower conversion ($8,000–$16,000)
Replacing a rarely used tub with a walk-in shower is the most requested bathroom project we see in Houston. The tub comes out, the wall and floor are rebuilt with a waterproofing membrane, the shower valve is updated, and the space is tiled and finished with a glass door or panel. A curbless (zero-entry) shower costs more in a slab home because the slab has to be recessed so the shower floor can slope to the drain.
Primary bath remodel ($15,000–$28,000)
This is the sweet spot for most Houston homeowners: a large walk-in shower, a double vanity with quartz top, new large-format porcelain floor tile, layered lighting, and a properly sized exhaust fan. If the layout works, keeping fixtures in their existing locations is the best way to stay in this range.
Full primary-suite renovation ($30,000–$50,000)
A down-to-the-studs renovation that reworks the layout — often removing a dated garden tub, enlarging the shower, adding a freestanding soaking tub, frameless glass, custom tile work, heated floors, and relocating plumbing. These projects transform how the room works, not just how it looks.
What drives bathroom remodel costs in Houston?
- Tile scope: square footage, tile size, and pattern complexity. Large-format porcelain looks clean and has fewer grout lines to maintain.
- Plumbing changes: relocating a toilet, drain, or shower in a slab-foundation home means saw-cutting and trenching the slab.
- Shower glass: a frameless glass enclosure is a significant line item compared with a framed door or a fixed panel.
- Vanity and countertop: stock vs. semi-custom vs. custom cabinetry, and single vs. double sinks.
- What's behind the walls: water damage, rotted subfloor at the toilet, or old cast-iron drains are common in older Houston homes and are addressed once walls are open.
Built for Houston humidity: waterproofing & ventilation
This is the part of a bathroom remodel you never see — and the part that matters most in Houston.
Waterproofing behind the tile
Tile and grout are not waterproof. Water passes through grout into whatever is behind it. A long-lasting shower needs a continuous waterproofing membrane — a sheet or liquid-applied system — over the backer board and shower pan, with sealed seams, corners, niches, and penetrations. We build every shower this way and flood-test the pan before tile goes on.
Ventilation that actually clears moisture
A properly sized exhaust fan — at least 1 CFM per square foot of bathroom (50 CFM minimum) — ducted to the outside, not into the attic, is the single best defense against mold and mildew. We often add a humidity-sensing fan that runs automatically until the room clears. Houston home inspectors check this, and buyers notice musty bathrooms.
Under-slab plumbing in older homes
Houston's expansive clay soil moves with wet and dry seasons, which stresses under-slab plumbing. In homes built before the 1980s, original cast-iron drain lines are often near the end of their life. When we remodel an older bathroom, we recommend a drain camera inspection so any problem is fixed while the floor is already open.
Accessibility and aging-in-place upgrades
More Houston homeowners are remodeling bathrooms to stay in their homes longer. Popular upgrades include curbless showers, built-in benches, handheld showerheads, comfort-height toilets, wider doorways, slip-resistant tile, and in-wall blocking so grab bars can be added anywhere later. Planning these during a remodel costs far less than retrofitting them afterward.
Do you need a permit to remodel a bathroom in Houston?
Replacing a vanity, toilet, or tile in place generally doesn't require a permit. Relocating plumbing, adding electrical circuits, or making structural changes does. Houston-area permits typically add $300–$800. Suburbs such as Pearland, Sugar Land, Friendswood, and League City run their own permitting, and homes in a FEMA flood zone may face additional rules on large renovations. We pull and manage all permits for you.
How long does a bathroom remodel take in Houston?
- Guest bath refresh: 1–2 weeks
- Tub-to-shower conversion: 1–2 weeks
- Primary bath remodel: 2–4 weeks
- Full primary-suite renovation: 4–6 weeks
Waterproofing cure times and the shower pan flood test are built into every schedule — that's time well spent. Custom vanities and frameless glass (which is measured after tile is installed) are usually the longest lead items.
Bathroom remodeling mistakes to avoid
- Tiling over drywall or plain backer board without a membrane. It's the number one cause of failed showers we tear out.
- Venting the fan into the attic. Moist air in a Houston attic leads to mold on the roof decking.
- Removing the only bathtub in the house. If you have young kids — or plan to sell to buyers who do — keep at least one tub in the home.
- Choosing natural stone without understanding maintenance. Porcelain gives a stone look without the sealing.
